TRUST FUNDRAISING & BID WRITING

Grant-making bodies, including Government, National Lottery and trusts / foundations, will assess your charity in more detail than any other audience. They will undertake due diligence on your finances and governance and will assess your evidence of need, impact, how you involve beneficiaries in all aspects of your work, your leadership, sustainability plans and more.

With so much competition for funding, it is not enough to be ‘just’ another worthy cause.

Your charity makes a difference in the world and changes people’s lives. We help you to increase your impact by securing new grant funding. Through our bid writing and trust fundraising services, we have directly raised over £20 million for our clients.

We have worked with over 100 charities, both large and small; local, national and international; across a range of causes and sub-sectors – health (physical and mental), social care (including disabilities and carers), poverty, youth, employability, infrastructure, art for social change, environment, refugees, domestic violence, family support, sport for development, animal welfare, funding, education, advocacy, systems change and more. At small charities we typically work directly with the CEO/Director, while at larger charities we often liaise with colleagues across departments.

As well as securing funding and receiving key outputs such as cases for support and prospect lists, our clients often describe intangible benefits resulting from our work. For example, service and finance colleagues gain a better understanding of what funders are looking for and are better equipped to support future bids; and the process of developing a case for support often helps colleagues in ways that can lead to service improvements, through developing clearer plans, building in improved learning mechanisms or better demonstrating impact.

SERVICES TO INCREASE GRANT FUNDING

Prospect research

We provide prospect research to identify and prioritise the best funding opportunities for your charity. The output is an Excel sheet with appropriate, prioritised trusts and foundations, with details such as giving history, criteria, application processes, estimate amount to request and priority rating.

We also undertake research into statutory funding opportunities, including grants, contracts and commissioning, with the output being a report either that details relevant live opportunities or provides a market scoping analysis.

Case for support

We work with you to articulate, with evidence and emotion, why funders should support your charity/project. This involves a review of existing content, plus a workshop and/or 1-2-1 discussions to gain an in depth understanding of your work so we can write the most compelling case for support. This can be an organisational case for support to secure unrestricted funding or can focus on a particular project or service.

Each case for support we develop provides the building blocks for subsequent funding applications and the content can also be used in other fundraising and marketing communications.

Trust fundraising programme set up

If your charity is new to trust fundraising or is seeking to invest in this income stream for the first time, we set your programme up for success through delivering the following steps (typically over a period of around 6 months):

  • Undertake prospect research
  • Develop the case for support
  • Build the pipeline and forecasting tool
  • Prepare high priority applications
  • Handover to a member of staff or freelancer
  • Provide access to trust fundraising training
  • Continue to support as an advisor (optional).

Review of trust fundraising programme

If your charity has a well-established trust fundraising programme but you believe it is not reaching its potential, we undertake a review of your programme’s outputs and results.

Our 2020-21 research with 248 charities found that 94% of grant-seekers believe their charity is not maximising its grant funding potential.

Our work involves a documentation review, benchmarking and individual conversations with key staff. We provide a report with analysis, findings and recommendations on how to maximise future grant income.

Tenders / bids / applications

We provide bid writing support on major funding opportunities, such as statutory or Lottery grant programmes, tenders and large trust applications.

We can either lead on the bid development process, ensuring that all required information is gathered in a timely manner and producing the most compelling responses to funder questions; or we can act as a ‘critical friend’, reviewing draft content and providing advice during the bid development process.

ACCOUNTABILITY

Once we agree our scope of work with you, we commit to deliver the outputs to the highest standard and within agreed timescales. This is dependent on receiving the information required in a timely manner. We maintain regular contact to jointly manage progress.

We charge a fixed fee for each piece of work we undertake. We do not offer an outsourcing or freelance service, for example providing x number of days per month. We do not work on
commission.

We follow the codes of practice and regulations relevant to our work, including those of the Institute of Consulting, Chartered Institute of Fundraising, the Information Commissioner’s Office and the law within the UK’s Charities Acts.

If you are looking for trust fundraising training, we offer three low-cost, high-value modules that cover the key elements of grantseeking. These courses include video training content in bite size chunks, with activities, resources and templates, for just £59.99 per course.

SUCCESS STORIES

I was very impressed by the amount that had been achieved and the quality of the work. Not only had KEDA been focused on delivering income, they had made significant progress in developing much needed systems and processes. In my many years as a Fundraising Director I have rarely seen such positive impact from external fundraising support.
We hadn’t done any proactive trusts and foundation fundraising before … they have supported us to secure over £400,000. They really understand, working sensitively, taking the time to listen to our needs and deliver quality work. KEDA have become part of our team and supported us to make significant progress to improving lives and outcomes for those affected by primary bone cancer.”
Alex helped us to, not only develop our cases for support, but to look at funders differently and be more clear on what we should focus on. Alex asks the right questions and has worked very well with our project managers to get the required information within tight deadlines.
